On this date, April 21st, 1836, at about 3:30 in the afternoon, General Sam Houston and his rag-tag Texian army fell upon the Mexican army under the command of General Santa Anna, taking the Mexicans by surprise as they enjoyed their afternoon siesta. The battle quickly became a rout and was over in about 18 minutes. The Texian victory and subsequent capture of Santa Anna resulted in Texas, then a colony of Mexico, becoming an independent republic. Minute for minute San Jacinto may have been the most important battle ever fought in North America.
