An Eighth Air Force B-17 bomber over Europe during World War 2. The airplane had drifted out of position in the bombing 'box' (formation) and was struck at the wing root by a bomb dropped by one of the aircraft above it.
HERO’S DEATH 1948
They said “He died a hero’s death,
Kathleen; you should be proudâ€,
I did not see bright glory’s blaze;
My head was ever bowed.
I valued not his country's praise;
I cursed all bestial war,
And they who said “hero’s deathâ€
My very soul did jarr.
