They dug a deep long tunnel out to the sea and had a man use something like a hand-operated bilge pump to constantly pump the water up to the mountain. The man had the title Pump-man Excelsior, translated. It was hard work really.

Thanks. I was very suspicious on how the salt water got up there. I never would have guessed a salty stream.

Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water (provided by a nearby subterranean stream) in the sun, leaving the salt behind. (wikipedia)

Where did they get the salt water from? And why did they carry it half way up the mountain to sit in settling ponds?
