This photo appeared in Life Magazine in 1967 as part of a collection of photographs by David Douglas Duncan, one of the greatest war photographers of his era. Most of the photos were taken at an advanced combat base called Con Thien ( Hill of Angels ), near the DMZ and only a couple of clicks from the North Vietnamese border. The US Marines at Con Thien ( Hill of Angels) existed in a state of siege and almost constant artillery bombardment for almost a year.
