good point about mammal-to-mammal cognizance, duckling. why do we want to just take that little guy and give him a big ol hug? by the way, hippos are more active than you think--they run, they swim, more than people realize. this little guy is too cute for words, you just want to cook him some eggs and toast.

Well, yeah, of course, Ms P.. 'bout any kind of bbq sausage would be tasty, from wildebeast to wildcat...the real test would be BBQ hippo brisket, maybe ribs...but I'd expect any part of a hippo would be tasty..they're herbivores, the meat is probably well inter-laced with fat, and since they kinda float around a lot and don't walk long distances, would probably be pretty tender. But no one with a heart would wanta eat that little feller in the photograph. Funny how the young of nearly all mammals appeal to us the way they do.

Actually, Elmo, for once you are not too far off the mark. In southern Africa, in national parks, the park wardens have to cull animals to keep the numbers down. It applies to hippos also, and I once had some very tasty BBQed hippo sausages in South Africa. Of course, they do NOT kill the babies.

“Behold the hippopotamus! / We laugh at how he looks to us, / And yet in moments dank and grim, / I wonder how we look to him. // Peace, peace, thou hippopotamus! / We really look all right to us, / As you no doubt delight the eye / Of other hippopotami.” Ogden Nash
