The reason why she has black fingers is probably becaz she has been peeling walnuts. Freshly picked Walnuts have green peel which colors your skin black afterwards. By the way I am afghan (hazara) but I dont care which rase does she belong to. She is cute and the pic is great

Also her runny nose is not from poor care from her mother. If you ever get the chance to go to Afghanistan or Peshawar, you'll notice kids are a more rough than they are here in North America. They'll often just be wandering around on streets by themselves, some barefoot, and some with runny noses. Thats just the culture there. Kids spend the whole day outside, exposed to the elements. No one babies them. Then the get home, get cleaned up, and go out again the next day. Seeing her on in Afghanistan Im sure no one is thinking "wow, her mother does not look after her."

Pashtuns traditionally put black eye makeup on for children as well as black bangles on babies. Its to ward off evil spirits. I think it looks beautiful and mashallah this girl is beautiful.

What a powerful picture! I hope her life improves. Such a beautiful little girl.

If we're not able to defat the Taliban and they wind up running the country it won't matter much whether she grows up to be beautiful or not, since she'll have to spend her life going around with a sack over her head, as will all the women of that country.

I believe she will grow up to be a very beautful and attractive woman, if she looks after her health. I hope her life gets better and her family.

She looks pretty pissed off to me. The way her eyes are makes me think she wants to kill something. Irregardless, beautiful picture. Afghanian girls are so beautiful in pictures. Just look at the original Afghan Girl.

The "makeup" on her eyes is free. You find the special stone and grind it up. Then apply it to your eyes. It is extremely healthy for your eyesight and it can be used as a substitute for eyeliner. You get two benefits out of "surma". You look good and its healthy for your eyes. I am Afghan and almost all Afghans put on surma. It can be bought as powder or in a stick. We put it on our children from a young age (6 months old or even younger). Its not always for beauty but for health reasons too. Researches have now said this is the best eye "makeup" out there.

For those of us "westerners" out there, the rest of the world has made cosmetics from locally found minerals and plants for thousands of years before commercial cosmetics came in tidy little packages. Many people worldwide still do so today because to either obtain it or afford it in the "prepared" form that we are used to here in the industrialized world is out of the question. There is also the question of eye makeup at all... Don't all little kids mimic what they see their parents do? Even with this said, in some cultures children wearing make-up or decoration is not unusual. Although I'll admit to knowing nothing about her particular culture, I don't find it unusual, although it is a striking contrast on such a young, smooth face. It looks, to me, clumsily applied like a child's imitation of adult make-up. As for the question of her fingers being black, THAT looks like the effect of frostbite to the extremities. I wonder if her toes look the same? And I don't know about you, but I've spent time with a lot of little kids and an inordinate amount of the time they have snotty noses! The nasty comments just show where people's minds are... in the gutter. She's a beautiful child! (Snot and all!)

You make it out of this special stone. You can find it everywhere in afghanistan. It is called "SURMA". Research has now proven that it makes your eyesight better. You can use it as a substitute for eyeliner. Now they are putting surma in Dolce and Gabbana mascara. I use surma and it works great. H

Remarkable photo of a beautiful little child. She is definitely of Aryan-Afghan parentage. As for her runny nose, she has sinusitis, which is not uncommon for little children, particularly in cold climates. Its also lack of proper care from her mother.
