This is the famous Fort Sumpter in the harbour of Charleston, South Caolina, where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired when the Union garrison refused to surrender the fort to the Confederate forces, commanded by General Gustave Toutant Beauregard. Next to the old fort is the Fort Sumpter First Baptist Church, built several years after the war was over, and directly adjacent is the Fort Sumper Yacht Club Marina. As you can see in the photograph the water in Charleston Harbour is always sparkling clear, a fact of which Charlestonians have for centuries been justly proud.
