I really think the colors are quite accurate, this is one of a series of news photos just released by Reuters and all show the same coloration of the hematite iron ore in Southern Australia. There is one mistake in the caption, however, this is actually a wallaby and not a kangaroo. Personally, I cannot distinguish them.
